unforgettable days in the 22nd regiment

The 22nd regiment, 3rd Division is one of turning points in my life. My late twenties saw me coming here and is viewing me reaching early thirties. It will be certainly remembered and will be recorded as one of the turning points in my life. All the moments should be recorded. Record masters memory.

Seeing Byung-hoon's death

Sergeant Song, Byung-hoon, a cable guy, was dead on 10 July 2006. I have not know him very much. What I knew about him was something that he came to my office to repair and check cables and communication. He looked a little bit less disciplined : mostly carrying no helmet, buckling no buttons even wearing helmets.

I don't have any special reason to show grief about his death because he was neither my friend nor one of my men following my orders. I just have seen him sometimes. What he brought him to my office was his mission, neither his personal interest nor friendship.

However, what makes me to write this essay is the current situation that ROKA has been faceing since the end of the Korean War. DMZ guard troops have been stationed along the southern boundary of DMZ for more than 50 years. Countless soldiers, sons of Korea, came to fulfill their mandatory service. All the people lived the front line say that things completely changed compared to the days they served. However, water pipe still go outside exposed to glacious cold of winter nights. Electric and communication wires fly over without protection against lighting and electric leaking.

Why SGT Song had to die? If we would have had buried electric wire underground, if we would have had pretty better infrastructure around the GOP, he would not have died. This accident intensified my convined opinion that low price should certainly pay in other ways. Good results come with good infrastructure. Budget saving should be consindered in many ways. If not, somebody should pay for very expensive price.
